We have been heartbroken to hear of the decision of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to terminate several of their chaplains, including YCWI Alumna Rev. Elizabeth Diop. You can learn more about this in the article “Cincinnati Children’s silent on jailed imam and 2 chaplains who say they were fired.”
We have been in conversation about how to best support our alumna during this time – and, with her permission, have written a letter of support. We have crafted and delivered the following letter to the hospital’s Chief of Staff. A PDF of the letter is available here.

When I first found out that my first-born was biologically male, I had a small freak-out. Even though I believe gender is a social construct and I logically know that gender takes many forms beyond the binary, I was confident in my skills to parent a strong, confident girl into womanhood, seeing as I am a (fairly) strong, confident woman (thanks to my own parents, mentors, therapists, Jesus, etc.). But I had little idea about what it would look like to help a young boy navigate the mystifying trek of masculinity, toxicity, and violence. Having a second biological male child has not helped my confidence. Add in knowing the statistics about mass shooters and working in ecumenical and antiracist relationships meant to counter the legacy of a church soaked in white supremacy and patriarchy, and I have had many days where I preemptively mourn for the enormous challenge in front of my little boys.

This past June, as conflict between Iran and Israel escalated and rumors swirled about potential US involvement, I opened my email inbox and clicked on the latest edition of Commonweal’s newsletter. It was about Dorothy Day, the 20th-century social activist who is now a candidate for sainthood in the Catholic Church.
